About Me

My name is John, Thryah being my online moniker.  I’ve been “working out” for about three year now, but actually “training” since mid summer 2007.  My life has changed greatly since I started going to the YMCA, and watching my diet more lately has just furthered the increases.

I was an inactive child who lived an inactive life.  Video games, specifically online text-based war games, were the staple of my life.  It was sad really.  Now, I’m not saying video games are bad, as I still love them.  All I’m trying to say is get some exercise in there too, otherwise it just isn’t worth it. Anyways, during middle school, my weight and body fat percentage skyrocketed.  I got up to 196 lbs in eigth grade, which is where I peaked.  After that things changed fast.  I lost about 50 lbs over the summer after that year, without really changing my diet at all.

I had even been “working out” before the summer, but my weight continued to increase.  What changed over the summer was that we bought a boat, and a lake house.  I learned to water-ski, I tubed for hours on end, and knee boarded for even longer.  Biking was another activity that I took to with a storm.  I started biking every day, averaging 10 miles a day at the end of the summer.  My lifts at the gym had been stalled for a while, but I was losing weight, and looking better.  More importantly, I felt better.

Since then I’ve kept my body-fat lower, gaining muscle mass and losing more fat.  It’s a constant battle for me, and I’m still not where I want to be.  That’s part of why I started this blog, to log my progress and get support, as it gets really hard to keep going when things start to stall, and those around you don’t seem to care much.  My lifts have since improved greatly, as when I started lifting I couldn’t bench press the bar, and I remember when I first realized I could flex my arms, I couldn’t keep them flexed for more than a couple of seconds.  Now I’m one of the strongest in my class at school.

My reasons for this blog have expanded though.  I’ve realized that not only am I training for a better physical self, but that everything I do right now is preparing my for life after school.  That’s why I also have posts about finances, and anything else I can think of that could help others learn from my experiences.

Current PR’s in lifting:

  • Bench press:  185 lbs.
  • Overhead Press: 115 lbs.
  • Deadlift: around 300 lbs.
  • Squat: around 185 lbs.
  • Row: around 150 lbs.

I’ll get more exact numbers soon, those are the best I have right now.  Also keep track of posts to find out how I’m doing on my financial goals, and on other goals as well.
